On Tuesday, the General Services Administration (GSA) published a list of more than 400 federal buildings and properties that will be sold, including the FBI headquarters, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Department of Justice and other key federal facilities. Hours later, 123 buildings, including high profile sites such as the J. Edgar Hover building and veterans administration buildings in Washington, DC, were eliminated from the list. For Wednesday, the entire list had disappeared from the GSA website.
britcommerce has created a map and a search table for the government’s properties that were for sale and in the list briefly, which also includes corresponding political representatives for each location.
Two cross reference data sets with cable to create the map: the list of “non -essential” properties originally published, and then eliminated by the GSA, and the inventory of own and leased properties (IOLP). The GSA defines non -basic properties such as buildings and facilities that “are not central to government operations” and in a press release on the list argued that sales would provide “savings to the US taxpayer.” The IOLP, a public access database, offers detailed information on GSA property and leased in the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam and American Samoa.
Among those that are originally denoted as for sale are historically significant properties such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in Chicago, designed John C. Kluczynski Federal Building and The Aduan House, an Art Deco building that occupies a city block in the old city of Philadelphia. The less prominent but still notable buildings include the Martinsburg Computer Center in Kearneysville, West Virginia, which houses what the IRS describes as its “Database of Master Files Files of Administration of Individual and Corporate Taxes” and the Central heating plant In Washington, DC, which provides heated and refrigerated water to government buildings, museums and national monuments. (Since then, the GSA has affirmed that not all buildings are on sale, but the agency has repeatedly changed its tone in different internal documents and communications to employees).
The GSA, an independent government agency, manages the Government’s IT and a significant part of the Federal Real Estate portfolio. In recent weeks, the agency has been decimated by forced resignations and reductions in forces, including the elimination of 18F, a GSA unit focused on government efficiency. The GSA Public Building Service (PBS) is reportedly Planning to reduce 63 percent of its workforce, around 3,600 people in total. Elon Musk’s associates have the GSA staff, including the Director of Technology Transformation Services, Thomas Shedd, a former Tesla engineer, and X Nicole Hollander’s staff. Several young Doge technologists also have access to the agency.
britcommerce reported in February that GSA employees were told to sell more than 500 federal buildings, including the properties that house government agencies and the offices of US senators. The list of these buildings divided the properties into “nucleus” and “non -basic” assets and designated the “non -coreal” assets that were sold.
A note on the original list establishes that the agency’s intention is eventually reduce the “real estate footprint size owned by 50 percent and the number of buildings by 70 percent.” The reductions will focus on the general offices space does not run from the portfolio that can be replaced as necessary in the private market. In the future, all non -basic buildings will be eliminated and their tenants will be made to leases. ”
