An official OpenAI account on X was taken over to promote a cryptocurrency scam on Monday night.
On Monday at 6:24 p.m. ET, the @OpenAINewsroom account, which shares OpenAI news and has nearly 54,000 followers, made a now-deleted post advertising a “$OPENAI” token.
“We are excited to announce $OPEANAI – the token that bridges the gap between AI and blockchain technology,” the post read. “All OpenAI users are eligible to claim a portion of the initial supply of $OPENAI. Owning $OPENAI will grant access to all of our future beta programs.” The post also included a link to a spoofed version of the OpenAI website at a URL that was not en:openai.com.
When I visited the site, there was a section to claim the $OPENAI cryptocurrency. When I clicked the button, it asked me to connect a wallet, which I didn’t do.
OpenAI and X did not immediately respond to a request for comment. As of this writing, the OpenAI Newsroom account has not posted anything explaining what might have happened. The account was launched Earlier this month.
