At some point midway through the film, as Driver’s Caesar speaks to the camera, the screen goes blank for a moment. There was confused applause from those who thought it was all over (if only we had been so lucky), but then, with the lights still off, a man ran up onto the stage in front of the cinema screen from the wings, holding a long microphone.
…The man stood to the side of the stage, illuminated by a spotlight, and faced Driver, who was back on screen, and asked him a question, as if he were participating in some strange pandemic-time Zoom press conference. Driver answered and the man ran off the stage. It was so strange and felt so completely pointless that I didn’t know how to respond.
