Although Wright’s involvement in this version was announced in 2021, with the busy Powell joining so recently, it didn’t seem possible that the stars would align for that perfect release date. But today we learned that this will be the case.

When Wright first joined the film, it was said that this project would be closer to King’s original story than the adaptation starring Arnold Schwarzenegger that hit screens in 1987. As of February 2021, Deadline reported “the baby driver screenwriter-director [Wright] He will co-write the story with Michael Bacall and they will be much more faithful to King’s best-selling novel. Bacall will write the script.”
In June of this year, shortly after joining the cast, Powell elaborated on that detail. talking to USA todayHe explained that he is a longtime Wright fan. “W.What has been truly incredible is his acting. [King’s story]. “It’s very much not Schwarzenegger’s original film, it’s much more based on the Stephen King version.”
Despite first hitting shelves in 1982, The running man it still feels eerily timely; is about a man who reluctantly signs up for a reality show run by the government and televised to an eager audience, hoping to earn enough money to get medicine for his sick daughter. Oh, and also not getting gunned down by the assassins chasing him, much to the delight of all the fans watching. Is Squid Game meets reality TV competitions (THR notes that O’Brien will play a fellow contestant) mixed with fears about rising health care costs and, for good measure, insensitive politicians. And, it’s worth mentioning once again, it will take place in 2025.
Paramount’s other release date updates today included Liam Neeson naked gun remake, due out on August 1, 2025 (a change of just a few weeks from its original date of July 18, 2025); Chris Miller’s as-yet-untitled animated Smurfs musical starring Rihanna will snag a July 18 date. Also of note for fans of the genre: Viciousa horror film starring Dakota Fanning, will now arrive on February 25, 2025, several months ahead of its previously announced late summer arrival.
