San Francisco is the city most prepared for new transportation technologies such as artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles and air taxis, according to a new urban mobility readiness index released on Tuesday.
The index, created by the Oliver Wyman Forum and the University of California, Berkeley, evaluated 70 global cities based on a variety of factors such as walkability, air quality, electric vehicle ownership and charging infrastructure, the proportion of pedestrians, access to public transport and cycling infrastructure. . Overall, San Francisco ranked first, followed by Paris, Singapore, Munich and Amsterdam.
The rankings changed when technological readiness was taken into account. This year, the index included a new technology adoption subindex which assessed how prepared cities are for new technologies such as autonomous vehicles. San Francisco, which is home to numerous autonomous vehicle companies and where Waymo operates a commercial robotaxi service, took first place. Los Angeles, Shanghai, Beijing and Seoul rounded out the index of the five most tech-ready cities.
