Original article:
On September 9, Apple streamed its Apple Event and unveiled a number of new products, including the AirPods 4 and the Apple Watch Series 10, but we’re here to talk about the Apple iPhone 16 and its various iterations.
Made from aerospace-grade aluminum and 80% recycled materials, the new iPhone 16 is as durable and stylish as ever. It’s water and dust resistant, and its glass is twice as strong as any other smartphone on the market. It’s available in ultramarine, teal, and rose, in addition to the traditional black and white. In terms of size, iPhone 16 is 6.1 inches and iPhone 16 Plus is 6.7 inches. iPhone 16 Plus has the largest iPhone display you’ll ever buy.
Apple Intelligence
Apple revealed that this next generation of iPhone is the first to have generative AI in mind from the start. The iPhone 16 is built with the new A18 chip created specifically for it. A 16-core Neural Engine makes the iPhone capable of handling large generative models. It has 17% more memory bandwidth and is 30% faster than the iPhone 15 (60% faster than the iPhone 12). Faster than the competition, too, challenging even desktop PCs — or so Apple claims. And that’s just the non-Pro version.
Apple Intelligence can create images, language, and take action on your behalf. Writing tools will be available from anywhere you write to rephrase those Slack messages you sent to your boss or those party invites you sent via iMessage. You can create unique emojis or original images on the fly, which I guess is something we need to have everywhere in our lives. Notifications can be summarized from the lock screen so you can get a general idea of what you’re missing in a long group chat.
One really cool improvement that Apple Intelligence offers is what it’s done with Siri, which is entering a “new era” with a richer understanding of language and a broader knowledge base. The live stream showed a user asking Siri to “send Erica the photos from Saturday’s BBQ” and then it did so. This is honestly pretty cool, as it feels like Apple is finally delivering on the promise of what Siri was supposed to be all along: a digital assistant that can help you with simple tasks and make your life easier.
Private Cloud Compute is Apple’s way of ensuring your data is never shared or stored, handling more of the AI processing on the user side and not holding anything that needs to be computed in the cloud.
Camera control
New controls on the side of the iPhone change the way you take photos and videos. Simply swipe along the side to adjust camera controls like zoom or depth of field, and use them in third-party apps like Snapchat.
iPhone 16 features a 48MP main camera with four times the resolution of iPhone 14, as well as a 12MP Ultra Wide camera that can capture 2.6 times more light than the previous iPhone. It’s now designed for macro photography, letting you get extra close to small subjects and still preserve detail and light. Using machine learning, unwanted audio from background sounds like wind can be ally removed from video.
Pre-orders start today, September 13thand will premiere on September 20.
